Weissenstein

Cheaper to a hiking paradise with impressive views

Fog or mist hovering over the entire Swiss Plateau, with sunny, clear skies above – this is Mt. Weissenstein. Solothurn’s ‘local mountain’, part of the first and highest Jura range, is a true walkers’ paradise. Here you will find mountain peaks offering far-ranging views, dreamy campfire spots, playgrounds set amidst nature and, here and there, a welcoming mountain inn or two.

The cable car takes you up onto Mt. Weissenstein in around 12 minutes, where – when the weather is good – you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view ranging from Mt. Säntis to Mont Blanc. Gaze in wonder at the lovingly cultivated Jura garden, with its 200 or so plant species, and enjoy great food and drink on the terrace of the Hotel Weissenstein.

Weissenstein Planet Trail

The Planet Trail from Mt. Weissenstein to Untergrenchenberg is an adventure for the whole family. Every kilometre walked represents a billion kilometres in the solar system, giving an inkling of the sheer scale of the cosmos. During the walk, the view of the River Aare and the crest of the Alps is a pleasure for everyone; the far-ranging views from Mt. Säntis to Mont Blanc are near-legendary. There are also at least two peaks directly along the way that provide great views, namely the Hasenmatt and the Stallfluh. And, as the cherry on the icing, there are countless mountain inns offering hearty local food for you to stop at, as well as numerous campfire sites for a relaxing break.

Searching for clues with ermine - Weissenstein Experience

An exciting treasure hunt on the Weissenstein for the whole family.

The trail starts behind the Sennhaus on the Weissenstein - curious yet? Anyone who discovers an animal track or even a real scent in the snow will quickly become the Sherlock Holmes of animal detectives. But be careful: not every animal will lay its cards or paw prints on the table. So look carefully, analyse and then - quietly - track down the animal. A hunt for clues for the whole family.

Weissenstein Panorama Tour

Shortly after setting out on this walk, you will reach the “Bubichöpfli” climbing area. Climbing enthusiasts can tackle the rock faces here.

The walking trail leads in steep hairpin bends via Gartenmatt and up onto the Hinterweissenstein. From here, the Panorama Tour truly lives up to its name. Weissenstein, Röti and Balmberg are the names of the beautiful vantage points. The snow-capped Alps twinkle in the distance, and far below the River Aare wends its way across the Swiss Plateau. There are countless campfire sites along the way, perfect for an extended rest.

Tip: Before starting the tour, why not view the dinosaur footprints at Lommiswil Quarry? Simply follow the brown signposts from Oberdorf Railway Station.
