The “Zibelemärit” – the local dialect word for “Onion Market” – is an annual market with a folk festival flavour. Much of the produce on offer consists of onions (woven into braids, wreathes and figures), although there are also textiles, jewellery, ceramics and toys for sale. The market is held on the 4th Monday of November every year. It spreads over the main streets and surrounding alleys of Bern’s upper Old Town as well as the Waisenhausplatz and Bundesplatz squares.

Officially, the market starts at 6.00 am and ends at 6.00 pm. In fact, however, the first sales are already made from 4.00 am in the morning.
