Twannbach Gorge

A varied hike with a unique view over the Three Lakes Region

The hike from Magglingen over Twannberg and down to Twann is one of the classics of the region. The panoramic heights, imposing gorge and sleepy lanes of the wine-growing village make this tour unforgettable. The Twannbach flows through the striking gorge, with high rock faces towering to the left and right, and the water cascades down to Twann where it flows into Lake Biel.

You can reach Biel quickly and easily by public transport. From the train station it's a short walk to the valley station of the Magglingen funicular.

Hiking through the Twannbach Gorge

The Twannbach Gorge leads from Lamboing to Twann and gets its name from the Twannbach stream, which flows through this breathtaking gorge landscape. Well-marked hiking trails lead from Magglingen over Twannberg and from Prêles through flowering meadows and shady forests down into the gorge, which was opened up in 1892.

This wild and romantic gorge is especially popular in the hot summer months, as the temperatures are pleasant and the high rock walls and trees provide shade. In spring, when a lot of water flows through the Twannbach, the waterfalls are particularly impressive.

At the end of the gorge it suddenly becomes quieter, and hikers are offered a breathtaking view of the wine-growing village of Twann as well as Lake Biel, the picturesque St. Peter's Island and the snow-covered Alps in the distance.

At the upper entrance to the gorge there's a glass workshop and bistro. In Twann, numerous terraces with culinary delights and wines from the region await hungry hikers.

To walk the trail safely, you should wear good shoes and take care in wet, slippery areas. The trail must not be left when in the nature reserve.
