Culinary delights and far-reaching views on the Gurten
Relaxation, culinary pleasures, or a cosy barbecue on Bern’s local mountain
For a unique panoramic view, you needn’t travel any further. Just minutes away from Bern city centre lies the Gurten, which rises to 860 metres above sea level. The breathtaking view of Bern’s old town, the Bernese Mittelland and the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Bernese Oberland will soon have you forgetting your daily routine. Those wanting to go higher can climb the 22-metre Gurten Tower.
On the culinary front, the Gurten spoils you with gourmet menus in the panoramic restaurant Gurtners, or in the family restaurant with the most beautiful sun terrace in Bern. Those who like to be right out in nature can use one of the seven barbecue spots, with wood freely available at these official “Brätlistellen”, as the Swiss call them. Each barbecue area also boasts seating, either on logs around the fire or at permanently installed picnic tables.
Travel in comfort by train to Wabern near Bern. The valley station for the Gurtenbahn funicular is just a short walk from the train station.
Culinary delights
From the spacious terraces of Gurtners restaurant and the Tapis Rouge family restaurant, you can enjoy the breathtaking view of Bern and the Bernese Mittelland all the way to the Jura. With its large panoramic windows, Gurtners restaurant invites you to enjoy culinary highlights with a magnificent view. Families are also well catered for on the Gurten. The family restaurant serves up a rich selection of delicacies for every taste at several buffets, with a playroom where younger family members can explore and let off steam. Those who like to keep it really low-key can use one of the seven barbecue spots on the Gurten.
Breakfast with a view

Grilling on the Gurten
A cosy barbecue
The seven different barbecue sites provided on the Gurten invite you to enjoy some relaxing time here. From the Gurten mountain station, the barbecue areas can be reached within three to eight minutes on foot.
- Playing & grilling
With the large expanse of green space, children can let off steam on the lawn while the adults prepare the barbecue buffet. - Reservation
The barbecue sites cannot be reserved. We recommend arriving early on your chosen day. - Disposable barbecues
Disposable barbecues are prohibited on the Gurten, for the sake of the environment and the lawn. Bern’s local mountain attaches great importance to keeping nature pristine and this outdoor space well-maintained. The park operators – and nature itself – are therefore very grateful to you for disposing of your waste correctly or taking it home again.
Views
Breathe deeply and take it all in from the Gurten Tower
Just a few metres behind the restaurants is the 22-metre-high, star-shaped Gurten Tower. The climb up a spiral staircase to the 22-metre-high, 360° viewing platform is well worth the effort, as here you can enjoy views reaching as far as Weissenstein or the Chasseral. Information boards tell you what you’re looking at: the Swiss Plateau, the Bernese Alps with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and the city of Bern with its surrounding settlements.Availability
