Public transport etiquette
Travelling by public transport could be so relaxed
Smelly food, cut fingernails and bare feet on the next seat: the behaviour of some passengers can be quite unpleasant. These 6 tips will make you a favourite with all your fellow travellers.
1. Keep seats free for fellow travellers
No matter how much you like your bag, it doesn't need its own seat. After all, it feels happiest very close to you, for example on your lap or under your seat. Do you want to do your luggage and yourself the ultimate favour? Then use the luggage service and both of you will travel to your destination totally relaxed.
2. Nice and quiet
Your taste in music is sure to be exquisite and your life incredibly exciting, but not everyone in the compartment wants to share it. Use headphones, turn down the volume and keep phone calls as short and quiet as possible. Your fellow travellers will thank you for it.
3. Feet up (but only if resting on something, e.g. a newspaper)
Your feet should feel comfortable, but not on the seat opposite. Stay polite and hygienic by keeping your feet on the floor. But if you happen to have the compartment all to yourself...? Then please always rest your feet on something to keep the seat clean.
4. Ticket, get set, go
Trust is good, checking is better. Show your ticket when the ticket inspector comes along. You do surely have a valid ticket for yourself, your bike and your dog, right? This avoids embarrassing scenes and makes life easier for everyone – and other passengers won't have to crane their necks to see what's going on.
5. Have a heart for trains
Save our trains from damage and dirt. Works of art belong in a museum, not on a train. Leave the windows and walls of the vehicle undamaged. Please dispose of newspapers or rubbish in the bin provided. No matter how curious the next passenger is – nobody wants to solve the mystery of your last meal!
6. Mutual consideration
Keep your distance from other passengers and respect their privacy. Nobody wants to serve as an armrest or cushion. But sometimes people want to talk – respect that. Be polite when someone tries to talk to you. And be just as polite when it's time to end the conversation. A smile works wonders. Not only for other passengers, but also for our team. It ensures a good mood and happy faces all round.
Travelling safely
It is important to us that you feel comfortable while travelling on our trains.
You will find SOS buttons in the new trains that connect you directly to our train drivers. Video cameras are installed in all our trains. These cameras automatically record everything. However, the recordings are only analysed by our security staff if a criminal offence has actually been committed. Otherwise the recordings will be deleted.
Legal matters
Insults, threats and physical assaults against our employees will be prosecuted ex officio (Public Transport Act (PBG) Art. 59). Violations of these rules may result in supplementary charges, exclusion from transport, claims for damages and criminal prosecution.
Please follow our employees’ instructions.
Before boarding the train, you must be in possession of a valid ticket for the relevant class. Check the online timetable before each journey to find out about delays, track changes or construction work.
