Environmental pollution
Responsibility for environmental protection
Environmental pollution poses a threat to human health and jeopardises existing ecosystems. BLS bears responsibility for environmental protection, for example in relation to the operation and maintenance of its railway network.

Air, soil and water pollution
The number of polluted sites according to the public register of polluted public transport sites (KbS ÖV) has hardly changed in the past three years. The changes that have taken place, however, relate to a shift between locations. One of the reasons for this is that new sites are recorded in connection with accident events, new findings on "old" landfill sites or decommissioning of railway facilities. At the same time, decontaminated sites can be deleted from the KbS ÖV. BLS aims to decontaminate polluted sites wherever possible as part of infrastructure projects, so that they can be removed from the KbS ÖV.
Polluted sites are areas that have been contaminated with environmentally hazardous substances as a result of past or current human activities. These sites can pose a potential risk to humans and the environment, especially to soil, groundwater and air. There are three main categories of contaminated sites: deposit sites, operating sites and accident sites. Known contaminated sites are listed in public registers.
